This collection documents the efforts of the American Joint Distribution Committee to resettle displaced persons in Austria
after World War II through reports and correspondence. It also includes personal correspondence, materials and correspondence
related to Ralph Segalman's work with Jewish Welfare Federations; articles and papers written by Segalman, material and correspondence
relating to Segalman's 1958 survey on the status and treatment of children with disabilities in Israel; a draft of Ralph Segalman's
autobiography; and materials related to his teaching appointments and teaching career.

Ralph Segalman born in New York in 1916. He married his wife Anita Cohen Segalman in 1940 and they had three children together
- Robert, Ruth, and Daniel. He received his BS and MSW from the University of Michigan and later went on to graduate with
his Ph.D. in Sociology from NYU in 1966. Over the course of his life he worked as the Executive Director of Jewish Welfare
Federations in Springfield, IL, Sioux City, IA, and Waterbury, CT. He also served as Executive Director of the Jewish Community
Council and Center in El Paso from 1961-1965. From 1945-1947 he was the Director of Vienna Area Operations of the American
Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) where he managed the JDC's efforts to resettle displaced persons in Austria in the immediate
aftermath of World War II. He went on to become a professor teaching at the University of Texas, El Paso, University of Texas,
Austin, and finally California State University, Northridge (CSUN). He retired from CSUN in 1989. During his teaching career
he published books and papers relating to poverty analysis and welfare policy. He also was a co-founder of the Journal of
Sociology and Social Welfare. Ralph Segalman passed away in 2008.
